Eely Point c.1905

The Upper Clutha Historical Records Society (UCHRS) is an incorporated not-for-profit society, established in 1985.

The Society preserves, for future generations, the records that make up the history of the Wanaka and Upper Clutha area. These records include photographs, diaries, minute books, station records, maps, newspaper clippings, family histories, Upper Clutha Pioneer Family Register and cemetery records. These are all held in a specially built fireproof room at the Wanaka Library.
Records can be accessed by contacting the Society. The records are commonly used for tracing family histories, by societies and organisations for anniversaries, for photos and for research for books.

The geographical area of the Upper Clutha is traditionally based on old county boundaries which cover the townships of Pembroke (renamed Wanaka in 1940), Albert Town, Cardrona, Luggate, Hawea, Makarora and the districts of Matukituki Valley, Mt. Barker and Maungawera.

There are also some records pertaining to the Queensbury, Lindis, Tarras, Bendigo, Lowburn (formerly Lowburn Ferry), Cromwell and Bannockburn areas.

What we do

A dedicated and busy team of local volunteers give many hours of their time to assist with processing photographs, documents and records. They also undertake research projects on local areas which are then made available to the public.

A computerised index of Historical Room contents is searchable by members of the UCHR Society upon request.

We have a large collection of prints, negatives and digital scans.
Photographs are in display folders and may be accessed through library staff or a duty member of the UCHRS.

Copies may be obtained by filling in the order form, which includes an agreement as to the intended use of the copy.  This also applies to electronic copies using a digital, cell phone or video camera.

The UCHRS owns the copyright on all material in its collection.  Copies supplied by the UCHRS may not be re-photographed or copied without permission.
Pricing is based on the cost of production plus a surcharge (dependent on the use), which goes towards Society funds.  Cost of production will vary.
For example, as at June 2013:
  • 1 x A4 (20 x 30cm) print is approximately $15.00
  • For private use - $10.00 per print
  • For commercial use - $30.00 per print
